Choosing kitchen worktops

Worktops take the most abuse and the most attention. Choosing on looks alone is how people end up disappointed a year in.

Laminate

Affordable, huge range, and modern versions look far better than their reputation. Vulnerable at cut edges and to standing water near joins.

Quartz and sintered stone

Engineered, consistent and hardwearing. Sintered stone and porcelain handle heat and staining particularly well. Both are a significant step up in cost and need templating.

Granite

Natural stone, so every slab is different. Durable and heat-tolerant; ask to see the actual slab rather than a sample chip.

Timber

Warm and repairable — you can sand out damage. In return it needs oiling and careful sealing around the sink.
