How solar panels work on a UK home
Solar is simpler than it's often made to sound. Understanding the four moving parts makes every quote easier to read.
Generation
Panels convert daylight — not heat — into direct current. That's why UK systems still generate on overcast days, just at reduced output.
The inverter
The inverter converts that DC into the AC your home uses. It's the component most likely to need replacing during the system's life, so its warranty matters.
Using, storing or exporting
Electricity is used in the home first. Anything spare charges a battery if you have one, and otherwise goes to the grid, where an export tariff may pay you for it.
Why quotes differ so much
System size, panel and inverter brands, battery capacity, scaffolding and electrical work all move the number. Two quotes for 'solar panels' can describe very different installations.
