uPVC vs aluminium vs timber windows
Frame material is the first real decision in a window project, and it shapes everything after it: the sightlines, the price, the maintenance and how the house looks from the street.
uPVC
The default choice in the UK for good reason. Modern uPVC comes in woodgrain foils and a wide range of colours, needs little more than cleaning, and is generally the most affordable option. The trade-off is thicker frames than aluminium, which means slightly less glass.
Aluminium
Strong enough for very slim frames and large panes, which is why it dominates on contemporary extensions and big glazed openings. Expect to pay more, and check the thermal break specification rather than assuming all aluminium performs the same.
Timber
Hard to beat on period properties, and repairable rather than replaceable. It does need redecorating every few years, and quality varies a lot between manufacturers — ask about the timber species and the factory finish.
