How the eligibility check works

Find out whether support may be available for your home

01

Check the main criteria

Tell us about your household, property and its current energy rating.

02

We assess possible routes

We use your answers to look for potential support and suitable options in your area.

03

Understand what comes next

If a route looks possible, eligibility still needs to be confirmed before any work begins.

Opening a modern white casement window in a British home

Look beyond the frame colour

Ask for the U-value, energy rating and exact glazing specification.

Materials made simple

Which window frame suits your home?

There is no single best material. The sensible choice depends on your property, the look you want, how much maintenance suits you and the size of the openings.

uPVC

Practical all-rounder

Low-maintenance, widely available and usually the most affordable route.

Best for: straightforward replacement projects

Aluminium

Slimmer sightlines

Strong frames that suit larger panes and contemporary extensions.

Best for: modern homes and wide openings

Timber

Traditional character

Warm, repairable and often the most sympathetic choice for period homes.

Best for: heritage appearance and listed homes

Comfort is more than warmth

The details that change how a room feels

Heat retention

Lower U-values mean less heat passes through the whole window.

Outside noise

Glass thickness, pane spacing and seals all matter, not just double versus triple.

Daylight

Frame width and mullion layout affect how much glass, and light, you keep.

Planning your budget

What might replacement windows cost?

These broad UK ranges are a starting point, not a quote. Size, access, colour, glass, frame material and making good can move the final figure considerably.

Six questions that make quotes easier to compare

A cheaper headline can hide a different glass specification, less making good or a weaker guarantee.

  1. 01Is the quote fully inclusive of fitting, making good and waste removal?
  2. 02What is the U-value and energy rating of the glazing you're quoting?
  3. 03Who carries out the installation — employed fitters or subcontractors?
  4. 04How long is the guarantee, and is it insurance-backed?
  5. 05Are you registered with FENSA or CERTASS for building-regulation compliance?
  6. 06How long will the work take, and when could you start?

Replacement window questions, answered

How long does it take to replace windows?

A straightforward whole-house installation often takes two to four days. Large bays, structural work, difficult access and extensive making good can add time. Ask for the expected programme in writing before agreeing the work.

Do I need planning permission?

Most like-for-like replacements do not need planning permission. Listed buildings, homes in conservation areas and material changes to the appearance can be different, so check with your local planning authority before ordering.

What are FENSA and CERTASS?

They are government-authorised schemes whose registered installers can self-certify that replacement windows meet building regulations. Otherwise, building control approval may be needed. Ask how your installation will be certified.

Is triple glazing always better than double glazing?

Not always. Triple glazing can improve thermal and acoustic performance, but it costs more and is heavier. Compare whole-window U-values and consider whether other parts of the home are a bigger source of heat loss first.
